I am a Mexican American brown nerd from San Antonio, Texas. I earned my nerdom through my seven years in band as an alto saxophonist and two years as a drum major. I consider myself a late 90s/early 2000s gay Latino Drew Barrymore in that my characters often think they have to be like the cool kids, only to discover that their power is in being their authentic nerdy selves.
Originally from Glendora, California, my former gang-affiliated and orphaned mother and immigrant father relocated out of the streets of Azusa in the early 90s in an effort to press reset on their teenage love affair and provide better opportunities for their son. The goal: graduate high school without becoming a parent. The result: an MFA in Screenwriting from the American Film Institute and two degrees from The University of Texas at Austin. (No kids yet.)
I write to expand the film and television canon to include stories of Latinxs, queer people, and other underrepresented communities. When Iām not writing at my kitchen table, I can be found on the dance floor getting down to salsa, bachata, merengue, cumbias, or reggaeton.
